‘Sex dolls’ or ‘sex robots’ are similar to arguments against pornography, particularly violent or ‘stupid’ pornography. Experiencing something like this would lower men’s respect for real women, lead to an increase in sexual violence and a cheapening of relationships. There has never been any legitimate academic research that I’m aware of showing that pornography does such a thing in real life. Now, I deliberately leave out the impact on children. Children are still learning and developing their ideas about human relationships and can be influenced in ways that adults are hardly sensitive to. I’m talking about adults. Adults don’t suddenly decide that rape is normal because they read rape fantasies online. Adults won’t suddenly decide that women are worthless as human beings just because they’ve had sex with a doll or a robot. Most adult people want more from their relationship with another person than sex. If it wasn’t, none of us would have friends, just our sex partners. I don’t think the existence of sex dolls/robots will change our desire to have real human relationships with real people. Even if some people decide that sex with their robot is better than sex with a human and so they don’t have sex with humans… To be honest, I’m not clear on who this is going to hurt. The pursuit of sex and sexual diversity causes more problems than it solves. After all, how many people have had the same best friend throughout their entire adult life, but have had ten, twelve, or twenty different girlfriends/boyfriends/significant others/sex partners in that time? If we weren’t so obsessed with sex, perhaps most of the planet could forget the belief that men and women cannot be friends without sex. A silly belief that it’s time we set it aside.
